Likely causes

  1. Weak or discharged 12V battery (self-start clicks or is slow)
  2. Cold-start fuelling: choke not used (carburettor) or a weak battery in cold weather
  3. Fouled or worn spark plug
  4. Low fuel, fuel tap off or blocked fuel filter

Check yourself first

  • Check the kill switch is ON, the side-stand is up and you are pulling the brake/clutch lever
  • Press the horn: a weak horn means a weak battery
  • Try a kick start (or a push start on a geared bike)
  • Use the choke for 30 seconds on carburettor bikes in cold weather
